พระสูตร

พระสูตร (สันสกฤต: सूत्र, อักษรโรมัน: sūtra, แปลตรงตัว 'สาย, เชือก') ในวรรณกรรมอินเดีย สื่อถึงคติพจน์หรือชุดคติพจน์ในรูปของคู่มือ หรือในความหมายโดยกว้างคือคู่มือหรือข้อความแบบย่อ พระสูตรเป็นหนึงในประเภทของเนื้อหาในอินเดียยุคโบราณถึงยุคกลาง ซึ่งพบในศาสนาฮินดู ศาสนาพุทธ และศาสนาเชน

ในศาสนาฮินดู พระสูตรเป็นหนึ่งในประเภทองค์ประกอบทางวรรณกรรม ซึ่งเป็นการรวบรวมข้อความคติพจน์สั้น แต่ละสูตรมีความยาวไม่มากเหมือนทฤษฎีที่ถูกกรองเป็นคำหรือพยางค์เพียงไม่กี่คำ ซึ่งมีวิธีการในพิธีกรรม ปรัชญา ไวยากรณ์ หรือศาสตร์ความรู้ใด ๆ ที่สามารถรวมกันได้ พระสูตรที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในศาสนาฮินดูถูกพบที่ชั้นพราหมณะ (Brahmana) และอารันยก (Aranyaka) ของพระเวทปรัชญาฮินดูทุกสำนักถือให้พระเวทเป็นทางนำของพิธีกรรม ศิลปะสาขาต่าง ๆ กฎหมาย และจริยธรรมทางสังคม

ในศาสนาพุทธ พระสูตรเป็นสารบบตามคัมภีร์ ซึ่งหลายอันถือว่าเป็นบันทึกปากเปล่าจากพระโคตมพุทธเจ้า แม้ว่ามันจะไม่ได้เป็นคติพจน์ แต่ยังมีรายละเอียดที่บางครั้งกล่าวถึงซ้ำ นี่อาจสะท้อนถึงรากทางปรัชญาของ สุกตะ (sukta; พูดดี) มากกว่า สูตร (sutra; เชือก)

ในศาสนาเชน พระสูตรเป็นพระธรรมเทศนาของพระมหาวีระ ซึ่งรวบรวมในเชนอาคมเช่นเดียวกันกับตำรากฎเกณฑ์ (บัญญัติในภายหลัง) ในภายหลัง
