ในสมัยคลาสสิกไม่มีคนยุคโบราณที่เป็นเหมือนนักวิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่ ยุคนั้นคือนักปราชญ์ที่ทำงานในด้านการศึกษาปรัชญาของธรรมชาติที่เรียกว่าปรัชญาธรรมชาติซึ่งเป็นที่มาของวิทยาศาสตร์ธรรมชาติ คำว่านักวิทยาศาสตร์ยังไม่มีจนกระทั่งศตวรรษที่ 19 ที่คำว่านักวิทยาศาสตร์ถูกนำมาใช้เป็นปกติหลังที่ถูกบัญญัติคำศัพท์โดยนักศาสนศาสตร์ นักปรัชญา และนักประวัติศาสตร์วิทยาศาสตร์ที่ชื่อ วิลเลียม วีเวลล์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2567

ในยุคปัจจุบันนักวิทยาศาสตร์ส่วนใหญ่ได้รับปริญญาในสาขาทางวิทยาศาสตร์และทำงานที่มีสายอาชีพในภาคส่วนต่างๆ ทางเศรษฐกิจ เช่น สถาบันการศึกษา อุตสาหกรรม รัฐบาล และองค์กรไม่แสวงหากำไร
