กลุ่มภาษาอินโด-อารยัน (หรือบางครั้งเรียกเป็น กลุ่มภาษาอินดิก) เป็นสาขาย่อยของกลุ่มภาษาอินโด-อิเรเนียน ตระกูลภาษาอินโด-ยูโรเปียน ในช่วงต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 21 มีผู้พูดภาษานี้มากกว่า 800 ล้านคน โดยเฉพาะในอินเดีย, บังกลาเทศ, เนปาล, ปากีสถาน และศรีลังกา นอกจากนี้ ยังมีผู้อพยพและชาวต่างชาติที่พูกภาษาอินโด-อารยันจำนวนมากจากอนุทวีปอินเดียไปอาศัยที่ยุโรปตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ, เอเชียตะวันตก, อเมริกาเหนือ, แอฟริกาตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และออสเตรเลีย และผู้พูดภาษาโรมานีหลายล้านคนในยุโรปตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ปัจจุบัน มีภาษาในกลุ่มภาษาอินโด-อารยันมากกว่า 200 ภาษา

ประวัติ

หลักฐานเริ่มแรกของกลุ่มภาษานี้เริ่มจากภาษาพระเวทที่ใช้เขียนคัมภีร์พระเวทของศาสนาพราหมณ์ในสมัยโบราณ เมื่อราว 3,457 ปีก่อนพุทธศักราช ภาษาสันสกฤตได้ถูกปรับปรุงและจัดมาตรฐานโดยปาณินี เรียกว่าภาษาสันสกฤตคลาสสิก ในแบบเดียวกับภาษาปรากฤตหลากหลายสำเนียงได้ถูกพัฒนาขึ้นมาในยุคกลาง ภาษาปรากฤตได้เกิดความหลากหลายกลายเป็นสำเนียงต่าง ๆ มากมาย ในอินเดียยุคกลางตั้งแต่ พุทธศตวรรษที่ 11 - 18 บางสำเนียงได้มีการใช้ในวรรณกรรม

การเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งสำคัญต่อมาคือการรุกรานอินเดียของชาวมุสลิมในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18-21 ในยุคจักรวรรดิโมกุล ภาษาเปอร์เซียเป็นภาษาที่มีอิทธิพลมาก ต่อมาจึงถูกแทนที่ด้วยภาษาอูรดู ซึ่งเป็นภาษาในกลุ่มอินโด-อารยัน ที่ใช้ศัพท์จากภาษาเปอร์เซีย แต่ใช้ไวยากรณ์แบบภาษาท้องถิ่น ภาษาหลัก ๆ ที่เข้ามาแทนที่ภาษาในยุคกลางได้แก่ ภาษาเบงกอลและภาษาฮินดี ภาษาอื่น ๆ ได้แก่ ภาษาคุชราต ภาษาโอริยา ภาษามราฐี และภาษาปัญจาบ

ในหมู่ผู้พูดภาษาฮินดี รูปแบบหลักคือภาษาพรัชที่เคยใช้พูดในปัจจุบัน และถูกแทนที่ด้วยภาษาขาริโพลีในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 24 คำศัพท์ที่ในภาษาพูดของภาษาฮินดีส่วนใหญ่มาจากภาษาเปอร์เซียและภาษาอาหรับ จนกระทั่งการแบ่งแยกอินเดียใน พ.ศ. 2490 ภาษาฮินดูสตานี (อูรดู) ถูกแทนที่ด้วยภาษาฮินดีมาตรฐานซึ่งเป็นภาษาราชการของอินเดีย ศัพท์บางส่วนที่มาจากภาษาเปอร์เซียและภาษาอาหรับถูกแทนที่ด้วยศัพท์จากภาษาสันสกฤตเพื่อทำให้เป็นอินเดียมากขึ้น
